Did you know that Missouri has over 300,000 ponds which cover more than 255,000 acres in the state?

Missouri’s pond resource is rich and diverse, providing thousands of hours of fishing and other fun to Missouri citizens each year. Because most of the ponds are privately owned, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) annually fields thousands of calls with questions on pond management.

People commonly ask how to tell if their pond can support fish, if the MDC will stock fish for them, how to have bigger or more fish, what to do with all that “moss”, and why their fish died.

This spring and summer, many pond owners may notice effects from our extraordinary cold and snowy conditions which can stress fish populations in the shallow and more fertile ponds.

To help area pond owners understand and better manage their fishing ponds, the MDC will be conducting a pond management workshop at the American Legion Post 33 in Cameron, on Feb. 24 from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

The workshop will take a comprehensive look at pond management with discussions including pond construction, fish stocking and management, aquatic plants, habitat enhancements, wildlife considerations and regulations. The workshop is intended for pond owners; however, anyone interested in pond management is invited to attend.

Admission to the workshop is free. Those wishing to attend the workshop should pre-register by calling the MDC Northwest Regional Office at (816) 271-3100 by Feb. 22. Space is limited to the first 70 registrants.
