Superintendent Julie Kirby reported the boiler cracked and failed beyond repair on Dec. 26, during the regular meeting of the North Daviess Board of Education held Jan. 15, 2001, at Coffey.

An emergency decision was made to proceed with the conversion of equipment planned for Summer 2001. New forced air units are now in place and work crews are completing minor work. Upon completion, the elementary school will be heated and air conditioned throughout.

In other business at Monday’s meeting it was noted that five persons have filed for board member election: Ruth Lewis, Chris Nelson, David Iddings, Kelly Hightree and Joyce Courter.

The calendar was adjusted for loss of days due to weather. There will be no classes on Feb. 19. April 11 will be a full day and April 12 will be half day with dismissal at 12:40. There will be school on April 16 and 17. The last day of school will now be May 16.

Further changes to the calendar may be necessary if more days are lost to inclement weather or other emergencies.

The financial statement was presented by Pat Heaps. Bills were approved as presented.

Linda Phipps made a presentation on behalf of the North Daviess Dance Team to participate at the ShowMe Games playoffs in Jefferson City. It was the consensus of the board to support the effort to obtain a place in the dance schedule.

The board conducted an interview with Valerie Parman regarding a possible vocational business opening for 2001-2002.

Mandatory filing with the Ethics Commission was set for Jan. 30, 2001. Those who need to file have been notified.

The speech and hearing report was delayed until next month.

Superintendent Julie Kirby reported on special education enrollments and associated costs.

Kerri Baker gave a report describing the goals and activities of this year’s student council.

STUCO sponsor Ms. Roberts reported the Homecoming dance and coronation will be held on the same evening this year, Feb. 3, in the high school gymnasium immediately following the ballgame with Gilman City.

The senior class received permission to schedule their senior trip for May 5-11, 2001. The class will tour Hawaii.

Ms. Kirby reported plans are underway to provide 15 hours of tutoring instruction for students in grades first through eighth. The emphasis will be in reading improvement.

Superintendent Kirby reported that Ms. Osborn will be teaching math for two blocks during the second term. Ms. Osborn was offered a contract as a part-time teacher for $3,000.

Elementary Principal Todd Willhite reported the elementary tournament will have eight teams participating and will be held March 19-24. This year, one MSHSAA official will be present for each game assisted by one volunteer.

High School students of the month are Beth Morris and Crystal Cook.

Lindsay Hunter and Darcie Iddings were appointed the first team at the Osborn Tournament with honorable mention going to Lindsay Ray, Mandy Williams and Jimmy Hunt.

New bases will be needed for the softball season as well as new catcher’s equipment. A request will be made for the little league to purchase some items.

Ms. Kirby said the state is projecting a decrease in available revenue. However, HB 5841 would establish a grant/bond process to assist schools in building new or repairing buildings.

Mrs. Willhite asked the board to review applications for the John T. Belcher Scholarship filled out by Courtney Phipps, Rachel Fisher and Amber Hackett. Consensus of the board was to send the application of Amber Hackett on to further competition.

Chris Nelson announced the Coffey Fire Department will host a community meal on Jan. 30. The Fire Department will provide the meat and guests are requested to bring a covered dish.

The board went into executive session to discuss employee matters and individual student concerns.

After returning to open session, Julie Kirby was offered a one year contract as superintendent for the 2001-02 school year for $54,000.

A stipend of $4,500 was offered to Todd Willhite for picking up the math classes.

The next regular meeting of the North Daviess Board of Education will be held at 7:30 at Feb. 12, 2001, at Coffey.
