A follow-up study of A+ students at NCMC also shows that these students excel at NCMC with 90 percent remaining eligible to renew their scholarships.
Students taking advantage of the Missouri A+ Schools Scholarship Program have doubled at North Central Missouri College in Trenton in the last two years. A follow-up study of A+ students at NCMC also shows that these students excel at NCMC with 90 percent remaining eligible to renew their scholarships.
Wally McGinnis, A+ coordinator at North Central, said 206 A+ students were enrolled at NCMC this fall compared to 49 in 1997. “The number of A+ students has increased dramatically as more schools in our service area have become A+ certified,” McGinnis said.
The study also shows that most A+ students attending NCMC retain their eligibility by achieving an accumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher and completing the semester at full-time status. “Last spring, our 125 A+ students achieved a 3.177 average GPA. This is excellent performance for the whole group. An added benefit is that many of the students will qualify for transfer scholarships to four-year institutions.” McGinnis said several factors contribute to the high performance of A+ students at NCMC. “Our small classes are a definite advantage. Plus, students are encourage to enroll in a student success course their first semester and to seek help from the Academic Reinforcement Center as needed.
I think the personal attention they receive from instructors and advisors is also a key.”
Although it is not required, NCMC tracks all A+ students and works with them individually when problems arise.
Currently, there are nine A+ certified high schools in North Central Missouri College’s immediate service area including Bethany, Brookfield, Chillicothe, Gallatin, Gilman City, Meadville, Milan, Trenton, and Unionville. Two others, Hamilton and Marceline, are scheduled for approval in 2001.
Tuition reimbursement through the A+ Schools Program is available at any public Missouri community college or vocational/technical school. Students can be pursuing a one- or two-year career program or be enrolled in a transfer degree program with plans to complete a bachelor’s degree.
To qualify for A+ tuition reimbursement, students must have graduated from an approved A+ high school and met all of the requirements, including: having attended a designated A+ school for three consecutive years prior to high school graduation; graduated with a 2.5 or higher grade point average; have at least a 95 percent attendance record; performed 50 hours of unpaid tutoring or mentoring; and maintained a record of good citizenship and avoidance of the unlawful use of drugs.
