Area antique enthusiasts will have an opportunity on Dec. 15 to have their antiques appraised while also helping to preserve antiques and collectibles at the Grundy County Museum and Grundy County-Jewett Norris Library.

The Trenton Antique Study Club is holding an “Appraisal Day” from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, at the Ketcham Community Center on the campus of North Central Missouri College in Trenton.

Carolyn Peterson, a certified appraiser, will be on hand to perform the appraisals. Ms. Peterson will appraise glassware and household accessories, but requests that visitors not bring art or Indian artifacts for appraisal.

For a minimum donation of $3, members of the public are invited to bring small items capable of being carried into the KCC. Individuals will be limited to two items. If they wish to have more items appraised, they will be required to return to the end of the line. Ms. Peterson has been a member of Questers, an international antique study group, since 1978 and currently serves on its international board. She has also served on the Missouri and Iowa Questers boards and was state president of Iowa Questers. She is manager of the Penney Antique Mall in Hamilton, which is comprised of 30 antique dealers and also sells antiques over the Internet.

Having conducted appraisal days for historical societies, Ms. Peterson also has appraised antiques at the Bingham Wagner home in Kansas City. “I do not profess to be an expert on any one item,” she said. “But I can usually find an answer to most antique questions.”

Ms. Peterson tells a story of an appraisal she did at Chillicothe in March in which a man brought a set of “loaded dice.” Hoping to receive a $200 appraisal, he actually obtained a $2,300 final selling price on the Internet that Ms. Peterson suggested that he try.

The Trenton Antique Study Club, which has a history of more than 50 years, makes an annual donation to a project in the community, for example, the gold weather van on top of the Grundy County Museum. This year’s contribution will be to the Grundy County Museum and the Grundy County-Jewett Norris Library.
