A special election will be held on Jan. 24 to fill vacancies in the Missouri Senate created when senators resigned after winning election to other offices on Nov. 7.

The elections will be held to fill the remaining 2-year term of Sam Graves (R-Tarkio) of the 12thDistrict which includes Daviess County. Graves was elected to the U.S. Congress, succeeding Pat Danner to represent the 6th Congressional District which includes Daviess County.

Other elections to be held Jan. 24 will fill the remaining 2-year terms of William Clay (D-St. Louis) in the 4th District and Joe Maxwell (D-Mexico) in the 18th District.

Party committees select nominees for special elections. Gov. Roger Wilson issued writs of election on Nov. 15, giving notice to Democrat, Republican and Libertarian district committee chairs. Candidates selected by political party committees have until Dec. 20 to file declarations of candidacy with the Missouri Secretary of State.
