R-3 board hears from structural engineer

The North Daviess R-3 Board of Education heard part of a report from a structural engineer read by Superintendent Julie Kirby regarding the recent cracking of the floor in the science room during their regular meeting held Monday, Nov. 13, 2000. The high school building was pronounced structurally sound. The floor will be replaced during the summer.
A financial statement was reported by Pat Heaps. Bills were paid as presented.
The board accepted a new contract with Paula Turley Peterson for special education transportation to Chillicothe.
Filing dates for board member candidates were set for the April 3 election as follows: Dec. 19 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m; Jan. 2 through Jan. 15, regular school hours; Jan. 16 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Ten elementary students and 21 high school students have stated they will participate in the free tutoring offered to students who scored at Step One or Two on the Spring 2000 MAP tests. A similar tutoring will be set up in February for Reading based on the fall administration of the Stanford Achievement test.
Elizabeth Harden, special education teacher, presented a list of activities to promote American Education Week which will end with a special Family Fun Night on Friday. Food Italiano will be the evening’s theme and features a free spaghetti dinner for students and their family.
The following revised policy updates were adopted as presented: Student admission/withdrawal; student educational records; student discipline; financial management; transportation; special education; workman’s compensation; harassment; immunizations; promotion and retention; employee leave; DNR orders; instructional services.
Michael Shaul was chosen Student of the Month at the elementary.
High School Principal Todd Willhite recommended the school increase the pay for basketball officials to $65 for next year and $70 for the year after. It was the consensus of the board that the increase seemed necessary. The time limit for softball has made it out of committee and will be voted upon by the association.
District tuition was set at $1,500 per semester.
Ms. Kirby presented the Annual Performance Report as issued by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Employees will receive a $25 gift certificate and deli trays will be provided for the employees and fruit and soda provided to the students.
The next regular meeting of the Board of Education was set for 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at Jameson.
