Fifty Gallatin FCCLA members attended the annual meeting of the Region 2 Missouri FCCLA at the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Kansas City on Oct. 19.

There were approximately 1000 members representing 39 schools present.

This exciting workshop was planned and lead by regional officers, including Jamie Lunsford, Region 2 2nd Vice president, and Kamille Burrell, Region 2 parliamentarian.

Highlights of the meeting included a presentation of the new FCCLA national program, STOP the Violence presented by State Vice-President Chase Cornett of Pattonsburg. The nationally recognized keynote speaker was Mrs. Harriet Turk of Memphis, Tenn. Her message focused on teens choosing healthy lifestyles and the importance of being in charge of your own choices.

Each member attending contributed one non-perishable grocery item which was donated to the Synergy shelter for victims of domestic violence. Over 950 items were collected.

On Oct. 8-9, Kamille Burrell, Jamie Lunsford and advisor Kathy Robertson attended STOP (Students Taking On Prevention), a workshop on preventing youth violence, in Jefferson City. STOP is a peer-to-peer national initiative that empowers young people to recognize, report and reduce the potential for youth violence.

The national peer education pilot program is sponsored by FCCLA and the U.S. Department of Justice Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) In past years, FCCLA has done projects in the community and school focusing on subjects such as careers and family relations. Along with these projects, FCCLA will also be working with the school to help prevent and control youth violence.

Keira Story, Katie Ward, Allison Lockridge, Whitney Wright and Lindsey Robertson attended the A+ (A Positive Lifestyle for Ultimate Success) Conference held in Jefferson City on Oct. 8-9. This personal development conference was sponsored by FCCLA.

This conference was designed to help participants develop a positive lifestyle to reach their goals. Involvement in this seminar offered members the opportunity to expand their leadership potential and develop skills such as planning, goal setting, problem solving, decision-making and interpersonal communication.
