Kristen Ellis, a 1999 graduate of Gallatin R-5, has been named a finalist in the American Royal Student Ambassador Program, which honors outstanding college students from across the United States for academic achievement and commitment to agriculture. Kristen is a student at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Totaling $30,000, program funds will be divided among every participating finalist. The 2000 finalists are students of agriculture in Kansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Illinois, Oklahoma,

Nebraska, Montana, Washington, South Dakota, Utah and Wisconsin.

Finalists are invited to attend the 2000 Program in Kansas City, where the Student Ambassadors, and second and third place winners, will be chosen. During the program, a panel of judges will observe the students over a three-day period beginning with a welcome dinner on Monday, Oct. 30.

Students also participate in a 30-minute personal interview on Tuesday, Oct. 31, and a formal presentation dinner on Wednesday, Nov. 1. One young man and young woman will be announced as the 2000-2001 American Royal Student Ambassadors at the presentation dinner.

Student Ambassadors, who receive $5,000 each, remain in Kansas City through Nov. 12 and make numerous appearances as American Royal representatives during the Rodeo, Livestock, and Horse Show. The Ambassadors return to Kansas City in summer 2001 for a paid internship

with Farmland Industries and the American Royal Association.

Second place winners receive $2,500 each. Third place winners receive $1,000 each. All other contestants receive $500 toward his or her college expenses.

The Student Ambassador Scholarship helps students pay for their education and reinforces the importance of the future of the agribusiness industry. Additionally, the program facilitates career opportunities for many students. McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, Farmland Industries and other Kansas City-area corporations and individuals support program candidates.

The American Royal is entering its 101st years as the country’s premiere celebration of agriculture. In addition to year-round educational programs and other special events, the Royal features a seven-week Rodeo, Livestock and Horse Show.
