Students from the University of Missouri-Columbia and other universities nationwide convened this summer at MU to explore life science internships and research opportunities through the Life Sciences Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program, June 12 through Aug. 3.

Josh Fitzmaurice of Gallatin participated in the program as an intern under the guidance of his faculty mentor, Jeanne Erickson. Josh Fitzmaurice is a biochemistry major at MU and is the son of David and Patty Fitzmaurice of Gallatin. He graduated from Gallatin High School.

This summer, the participants conducted research with scientists in a variety of departments including biological sciences, animal sciences, physiology, pharmacology and nutritional sciences. The program was funded by mission enhancement money and money from the provost’s office.

MU students and those from other colleges participated in independent research projects with an MU faculty mentor. They also were involved in evening seminars and lunches related to scientific research, scientific ethics and careers.
