The Albany, MO National Investors Thunder went 4-0 en route to the Missouri Class B State title in Rolla, MO, on July 30-31. The championship secured for Thunder a berth in the 2000 national tournament to be held Aug. 30-Sept. 3 in Springfield, MO.

Once again, Thunder’s pitching dominated the competition on extremely muddy fields due to heavy rains. Eric Lewis and Brandon Craig were each 2-0 on the mound. Lewis threw one shutout and did not allow an earned run while striking out 16. He threw a 5-hitter and a 3-hit shutout. Craig only allowed one earned run and 4 hits while striking out 17 in his 2 starts.

Having outstanding offensive performances were: Andy Lewis (.571 BA, 5 runs), Bill Cook (.500 BA, 4 RBI), Keith Schmitz (.429 BA, 3 RBI, 3 runs), Rodney Doak (.385 BA, 5 RBI) and Thad Lincoln (.375 BA). Other local players are Nylen Lewis of Winston, Andy Lewis of Jamesport, Tim Jermain of Albany and Randy Luke and Rod Walker of Stanberry.

Thunder defeated St. Joseph Herzog, 4-1, in the opener behind a 2- rbi double by Lincoln and 2-run triple by Schmitz. Thunder knocked off Brookfield Graff Pepsi, 9-2, in the second game behind a 3-for-3 performance by Cook, who also drove in 3 runs. Schmitz laid down a first inning bunt, stole second and came in on Doak’s single to provide the only run in Thunder’s 1-0 victory over Smithton Budweiser in game 3. Andy Lewis doubled, tripled and scored 2 runs as Thunder defeated Brookfield, 4-1, for the championship.

Thunder is gearing up for the ISC World Tournament in St. Joseph. They opened play Friday night at 6 p.m. against First Nation Pride Native American from Saskatchewan, Canada. Regional radio KKWK, 100.1 FM, will broadcast all Thunder games in the world tournament

This will be the third appearance for Thunder at the world tournament. The team’s record is now 48-14.
