Lee Rogers of Gallatin will begin attending Des Moines University; College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery this August, after completing four years of study in Pre-medicine Health/Exercise Science at Truman State University in Kirksville. He is a 1996 graduate of Gallatin high school and is the son of Bob Rogers of Gallatin and Madelynn Adkison of Jameson.
Lee will continue employment as a full-time EMT for the Macon County Ambulance until his classes begin in Des Moines. The first two years of the Podiatric Medicine and Surgery program consist of class time, mostly alongside the D.O. students studying all aspects of medicine from cardiology to dermatology. The last two years are spent in the clinics and hospitals concentrating on lower limb pathology and treatment.
After four years, Rogers will receive the DPM degree (Doctor of Podiatric Medicine.) At that time, he will choose a 1-, 2-, or 3-year residency in a sub-specialty of podiatry. Currently, he is considering a 3-year residency in foot and ankle surgery and trauma reconstruction.
According to Rogers, although a podiatrist’s study includes general medicine in many rotations, he is limited to diagnosis and treatment below the knee joint. Common ailments for which patients seek podiatrists’ expertise include heel, calf, and arch pain as well as bunions, hammertoes, ingrown/infected nails, sprained ankles and ankle/foot fractures. Treatment may include physical therapy, surgical intervention, orthotic devices (shoe inserts), and the prescription of both topical and systemic medications.
