The City of Pattonsburg is applying for a $144,000 Landmark Local Parks Grant in hopes of building a new recreational park adjacent to the school on the west side of town.
A city park has been a priority among desired improvements since Pattonsburg was forced to relocate on higher ground following the floods of 1993. Securing state grant funding is considered crucial to achieving success.
Pattonsburg’s mayor and council established the Pattonsburg Park Board in January, 2000. The following people were appointed to serve: Penny Gardner, president; Brenda West, secretary; Pam Mooney, Lisa Hartley, Sandy Booth, Ronnie Gardner, Ed Howard, Maurice McNeely, and Leonard Barr.
Approximately 16 acres of land is being donated by Pattonsburg R-2 School District to locate the proposed park. The appraised value of the land is $70,000, a sum which can be used to leverage grant dollars as an “in-kind” donation.
This land was homesteaded by John and Nancy Gwinn Meadows in 1841 after the family journeyed all the way from Greenbrier River in Virginia by wagon. The Meadows were prosperous farmers with John becoming President of the Farmers’ Bank of Gallatin. After his death in 1880, Mrs. Meadows moved into Pattonsburg where she lived until her death in 1891.
The land was held in the Meadows family for decades, most recently by the great granddaughter of the homesteaders, Maxine Meadows Morris. Both Maxine and her husband, Woodrow, were longtime residents who operated a service station in old Pattonsburg for over 40 years. The Morrises sold the land to the City of Pattonsburg when Grand River flooding made town relocation necessary.
The Morrises now plan to construct a 32×40 shelter building in the new park. The building will be built by Brown Lumber Company. The park board will designate the building to be named the Meadows/Morris Shelter to perpetuate the historical link involved with the park land.
You can also help build the new park in Pattonsburg to its potential. Pledges of cash donations, labor, use of equipment and supplies are being accepted now. Make your pledge by calling Pattonsburg City Hall at 660-367-4412 or by notifying any park board member.
