Students, parents, teachers and coaches paused during May’s busy string of activities Monday night to honor and recognize members of the Gallatin R-5 academic team, boys golf team, girls and boys track squads.

Members of the academic team recognized by sponsor Glenda St. John were: Chanel Burge, Kelly Story, Jack Taylor, Wes Gay, Meredith McCann, Ben Hubbard, Stacy Craig, Christina Hood, Catherine Berry, Trine Kristiansen, Stephanie Swanstone, Jake Rutherford, Josh Vance and Jon Craig.

Golf letter winners and members of the Bulldog defending GRC, district and Class 1A state championship golf team were introduced by Coach Tom Garnett. They are: Scott Crose, Brice Garnett, Chad Sullenger, Jake Humphrey, Joey Evans, Neal Steward, Ryan Thompson, Luke Leeper, Brant Conover, Zach Strange, Justin Kerns, Jeremy Borges, Brandon McLey, Scott Wilkinson and Phillip Berry, Travis Bohannon, Kyle Gannon, Wes Gay, Canada Harris, Robert Mazur, Zach Osgood, Jake Rutherford and Matt Swofford.

Special boys golf awards were given to: Scott Crose, low stroke average; Brice Garnett, most medals, meets; Chad Sullenger, coach’s award; Jake Humphrey, birdie award; Joey Evans, most consistent; Neal Steward, best attitude; and Ryan Thompson, most improved.

Girls track and field letter winners included: Kayli Burrell, Kamille Burrell, Roxi Davitt, Rochelle Davitt, Courtney Houghton, Jamie Lunsford, Laura McCann, Allison Spidle and Rebecca Stith. Special awards were given to: Allison Spidle, MVP; Kayli Burrell, rookie of the year; and Laura McCann, coaches award.

Boys track and field letter winners were: Quentin Carroll, Robert Heldenbrand, Nathan Henderson, Ben Hubbard, Blake Parker, Byron Roberts, Phillip Sauls, Austin Story, Adam Whitney and Bobby Wood. Justin Baker, Cody Boehm and Greg Hickey also were recognized as team members. Special award winners were: Robert Heldenbrand, MVP; Phillip Sauls, rookie of the year; and Bobby Wood, coaches award.

Three-sport participants for the 1999-2000 school year were; freshmen Justin Baker, Kamille Burrell, Kayli Burrell, Roxi Davitt, Jamie Lunsford and Laura McCann; sophomores Robert Heldenbrand, Jake Humphrey, Blake Parker, Austin Story, Zach Strange and Scott Wilkinson; juniors Rochelle Davitt, Nathan Henderson and Luke Leeper; and seniors Quentin Carroll, Courtney Houghton, Allison Spidle, Neal Steward and Rebecca Stith.

Allison Spidle and Courtney Houghton were recognized as 4-year, 3- sport letter winners.

The National Student Athlete award, given to varsity and junior varsity athletes in each sport, as chosen by their coaches, were received by: Allison Spidle, varsity golf; Jamie Lunsford, jayvee golf; Courtney Houghton, varsity softball; Nathan Henderson, varsity football; Adam Whitney, jayvee football; Shannon Batson, varsity basketball; Kamille Burrell, jayvee basketball; Neal Steward, varsity basketball; Brice Garnett, jayvee basketball; Austin Story, varsity wrestling; Luke Leeper, jayvee wrestling and golf; Scott Crose, varsity golf; Rochelle Davitt, varsity track; Amanda Boyd, jayvee track; Ben Hubbard, varsity track; and Blake Parker, jayvee track.

Courtney Houghton and Neal Steward each received the Missouri High School Activities Association Award of Excellence on behalf of R-5 administrators, coaches and staff. The award is given to one boy and one girl, grades 9-12, who have promoted integrity and sportsmanship in athletics.

Quentin Carroll received the Distinguished Athlete Award given by the United States Marines for courage, self confidence and leadership.

Allison Spidle and Neal Steward were awarded the Scholar Athlete Award given by the United States Army Reserve based on selection by varsity coaches. The award recognizes athletic participation and excellence along with academic achievement.
