Gallatin alumnus Keith Morrissey will deliver the Commencement address as 42 graduating seniors receive high school diplomas during ceremonies to be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 14, in the gymnasium of Gallatin R-5 High School.
For the past 10 years Mr. Morrissey has been an employee of State Farm Insurance and has been an active community leader at Macon. The 1973 GHS graduate is one of Gallatin’s best known athletes, playing for the University of Missouri football team on full scholarship.
After redshirting his second year, Morrissey was a starting letterman for the Tigers for three seasons during some of MU’s most exciting seasons. Morrissey received “Lineman of the Week” accolades from Sports Illustrated for his part in MU’s victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide in September, 1975. He played in upset wins over Southern Cal, Ohio State and Nebraska and was a team co-captain in 1977.
Mr. Morrissey graduated with a degree in educational studies in 1979 and began a career in insurance sales first with New York Life and, since 1990, with State Farm Insurance. He was actively involved in MU athletic fundraising activities from 1982-89.
While living at Macon, Keith has emerged as a community leader active in the Macon Optimists Club, Macon Jaycess, Macon Chamber of Commerce, Elks Club and Macon Country Club. He also has performed volunteer work with the American Heart Association. He served as a board member for the Macon County Commission for Developmentally Disabled Citizens.
Morrissey served as a councilman for the City of Macon in 1992-93. He also worked on the city’s board of economic development, chairing a swimming pool committee.
Keith and his wife, Cyntha Fuchs Morrissey originally from Columbia, Mo., are the parents of three daughters. They are Hannah, 16, Haley, 14, and Hilary, 9. Morrissey has served as a school board member at Immaculate Conception School and is a longtime coach or sponsor, director or scheduler in Macon’s baseball and basketball youth programs. He has also been a volunteer worker for Girl Scout and Boy Scout programs.
Keith’s parents, now both deceased, were longtime and widely known Gallatin residents. His father, Ben Morrissey, was a mainstay for the Daviess County Country Club and his mother, Evelyn, served many years as administrator at Highlands Nursing Home which later became Daviess County Care Center.
