Spring is the perfect time for local communities to enhance their rural fire protection efforts by installing dry fire hydrants. Currently under a RC&D grant local fire departments can install dry hydrants free of charge.

Dry fire hydrants are easy to install and require a minimum amount of time and labor. Most installations in local lakes and ponds require two hours or less.

If you are a landowner with a pond within 100 feet or so of a gravel or blacktop road you would be eligible for a free dry hydrant on your property. But with any free program, they usually don’t last long and once all grant money is expended the cost will have to be paid for by the fire department or the landowner.

Average cost per installation runs around $500 and the grant monies will probably be gone by May or June.
