The Natural Resources Conservation Service formerly the Soil Conservation Service was established in 1933 to provide technical information to the nation’s farmers to protect the land from erosion. Currently the NRCS provides service to all people without regards to race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, disability, political beliefs, and marital or family status.
NRCS services are free to the public and include technical information to protect our natural resources for future generations. Some of the programs are Conservation Reserve program (CRP), Wildlife Habitat Improvement Program (WHIP), Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP) and Conservation Buffers to name a few. Som of the programs offer financial incentives for applying conservation practices.
Most farmers are aware of the programs and services provided; however, there are many new landowners that have moved to the rural areas from an urban setting or from other parts of the country that are not familiar with what NRCS has to offer.
If you have any questions about erosion or any other conservation issues you can contact your local NRCS office. There is an office in nearly every county in the state. The phone number can be found in the phone book listed under the USDA Service Center.
