Cummings tops April 5 boxing card at Station Casino
Live professional boxing returns to Station Casino Kansas City at 7 p.m., April 5, with an 8-fight card in the Grand Paviion that features an 8-round super middleweight (168 lb.) bout between World Boxing Association North American Champion Craig “Kid Fire” Cummings of Kansas City, and Timur “Iron Kid” Korsakov of Wichita, Ks.
Cummings, a Gallatin, Mo., native, regained his WBA North American title January 26 at Station Casino in a rematch with Tim “The Terrible” Bryan. With his title back, Cummings expects to regain his Top 10 ranking shortly and looks forward to a title bout in Europe.
Cummings, 43-4-1, and Korsakov, 14-4, had a fight scheduled in July 1998; however, Korsakov was injured in an automobile accident just before the match. Korsakov, originally from Kazan, a Russian city 400 miles east of Moscow, began boxing while in the Russian Navy. He was stationed on a gun boat in the Kaspian Straits and sparred with shipmates for exercise. He later began kickboxing and traveled extensively between Russia and the United States. He immigrated to America and immediately won 6 tough man contests. Korsakov married a native of Wichita and began boxing on the punishing Midwest circuit.
