Even though next week’s spring election votes are not yet cast, interest in the August primary election is spurred by an unusually large list of candidates for county offices. The filing period for the election closed yesterday.
The retirement of longtime sheriff Tom Houghton prompted eight candidates to run for the top law enforcement position on the county level. Six candidates on the Democrat ballot are Robert Smith of Jameson; Jerry Baldwin, Darren Price, Doug Hamilton, Don Masters Jr., all of Gallatin; and Harold E. Mooney of Pattonsburg. The two Republican candidates are Bill Sites of Gallatin and Kevin Heldenbrand of Winston.
Three other county offices offer primary election choices for voters. Tom Houghton and Joe Evans, both of Gallatin, will compete for District 2 Commissioner in the August primary to become the Democrat nominee to face incumbent Danny Heldenbrand in the November election.
There is a contest for the Democrat nominee for county assessor. Lisa Vanderslice and Bob Rogers, both of Gallatin, are candidates on the Democrat ballot. Betty Harmison of Jameson is the only candidate on the Republican ballot.
Teresa Eaton and Vicki Corwin, both of Gallatin, are Democrats competing for Public Administrator in the August primary to oppose incumbent Republican Rhea Youtsey next November.
All the county races cited above leave only two offices were incumbents are running for re-election unopposed. Coroner Wallace Greene will be unopposed on the Democrat ticket in the primary election as well as next November. District 1 Commissioner David Holcomb of Coffey is unopposed on the Republican ticket for both the primary and general elections.
