The North Central Area Vocational-Technical School in Bethany will be doubling its tuition for the upcoming 2000-2001 school year. The hike in tuition will bring the school in line with other vo-tech schools in the area.
Students from 15 area schools attend NCAVTS in Bethany. This year the tuition for the vo-tech was $950, but next year, school districts will be paying $1,875 per student.
The school was built in 1980, and according to Jim Lee, director of the school, the first priority of the district was to fill classes. Tuition for the vocational school has remained almost unchanged since the school was opened. The tuition in 1980 was $900 per student, which was raised two years ago to $950.
Lee said the costs have been escalating since the school was opened. “We’re at a point now that the school is basically filled, and there is a waiting list for some classes,” said Lee.
Tuition for NCAVTS has been a bargain for the 15 schools sending students there. According to a story recently in the Albany Ledger, tuitions for similar institutions in the area start at $1,600 in Chillicothe and top out at $2,200 for students attending the Ft. Osage vo-tech school.
Tuition for attending a vocational school is figured into the district’s per pupil aid cost, according to Lee. Although a doubling of the tuition is a hefty increase, most school districts should be
covered by the state for the tuition hike.
The Ledger story also reports that according to a state funding formula, NCAVTS should be charging $1,969 per student this year. The South Harrison district may have been subsidizing the difference for the past several years. The Albany and Gilman City districts have already approved next year’s tuition increase for their vo-tech students.
