Program provided families with the opportunity to attend two group meetings.
The Pattonsburg Preschool and Parents as Teachers programs recently provided their families with the opportunity to attend two group meetings. The content of the meetings focused on the benefits of early reading to children.
The program was presented by Mrs. Joan Bales from Heartland Foundation and the Missouri Humanities Council. Each family that attended received seven free children’s books, information on the importance of reading and age appropriate development information from Mrs. Bales and Ms. Leann Hughes.
The meetings were held on two consecutive Friday evening in the preschool class room. Baby- sitting, refreshments and prizes were also provided by the school.
Meeting to discuss survey
The Pattonsburg R-2 preschool advisory committee met during February to discuss the replies from the survey mailed out the first of January.
Those in attendance were Ms. Leann, Title I preschool teacher; Tracy Crone, Angela Feck, Kelly Hightree, three year old representatives; Linda Vivens, four year old representative; and Jamie Dunagan, Pattonsburg staff.
Replies to the survey revealed several positive aspects with the current preschool program, which included the following.
1. Age appropriate educational concepts are being taught.
2. Age appropriate socialization skills are being experienced.
3. A safe and supportive environment has been established.
4. The children enjoy coming to school.
5. Interest centers are attractive and educational for the children.
6. The preschool playground is safe, fun, and age appropriate.
Replies to the survey also included the following areas that need attention.
1. Safe steps need to be placed at the front/back of the school so students and families may enter the preschool safely. The current steps are very dangerous. (Volunteers have agreed to move and attach the steps as soon as possible).
2. Snow needs to be removed from the front/back of the building before school starts.
3. Two full days of preschool for the four to five year old group next year.
4. Possibly the three-four year old group go three mornings a week next year.
5. A bus driver to take the students home from half day preschool sessions.
6. A teachers aide is needed everyday during preschool.
7. The preschool building needs to be provided janitor services by the school district.
