Numbers tell the story of Gallatin’s last-game demise.
Trenton’s Lady Bulldogs outscored Gallatin, 41-27, in the 2nd half to pull off a 69-52 victory in Friday night’s championship game of District 16. Trenton, 18-6, moves on to Missouri Western March 8, to play St. Pius. With a 20-8 finish, Gallatin’s girls claimed their 8th 20-win season in the last 11 campaigns.
Numbers tell the story of Gallatin’s last-game demise. The GHS Lady Bulldogs committed 20 turnovers, 9 alone in the 1st quarter. Trenton outrebounded Gallatin by a whopping 33 to 18 margin. Gallatin hit 13 field goals on 31% shooting. Trenton totaled 26 field goals and a 41% shooting success.
A quick burst by Trenton, punctuated by GHS miscues, led to a 14-2 start for the black and gold. Sophomore Erin Sweatman fueled a Gallatin rally in the 2nd quarter by connecting for 14 of her 18- point total. Fouled on a defensive rebound, she hit both charity shots to drag her team to within 22-20. Fouled in the act of shooting, she nailed both shots to keep that 2-point margin with 1:21 to play in the half. Her 3-pointer inside the final minute narrowed the gap to 26-25 but a defensive lapse allowed Trenton a rebound and put back off a missed free throw.
Trenton rolled to a 9-2 start and 41-29 lead in the 3rd quarter before buckets by Roxi Davitt, Rochelle Davitt and Kayli Burrell stemmed the tide for Gallatin. With 7:22 to play in the game, Gallatin chalked up a traditional 3-point play when Roxi fed Rochelle in the lane for a bucket and foul shot. That would be the final GHS bucket under a double-digit deficit.
A bright spot for Gallatin came at the free throw line. The GHS girls outdueled their counterparts from the stripe, hitting 24 of 33 (72%) to Trenton’s 17 of 26 (65%). Even thought they trailed, the Lady Bulldogs of Gallatin shot 15 free throws in the 4th quarter, making 10. Trenton made 8 of 9. None of the 10 GHS players who stepped to the foul line in the game shot below 50%.
Sweatman finished with 18 points to lead Gallatin. Rochelle Davitt added 15. Trenton was led by a trio of scorers in Julie Coon 17, Cara Henderson 14 and Casey Beavers 13.
