Gallatin’s representation on the 1999-2000 All-Grand River Conference Basketball Teams included 7 players overall and 3 unanimous choice selections. Players were selected Saturday morning on the heels of Friday night’s final regular season games.
League champion Gallatin dominated the boys selection process, along with runnerup South Harrison. Albany dominated the girls list with 4 selections.
Gallatin picked up 2 of the 5 unanimous choice 1st team selections on the boys squad. Seniors Chad Sullenger and Quentin Carroll were each named on every ballot by league coaches. Other unanimous choice picks were Albany’s T. J. Hinkle, South Harrison’s John Leazenby and Stanberry’s Bob McQuinn. Princeton’s Levi Nigh was also named to the 1st team.
Bulldog sophomore Robert Heldenbrand heads a list of 6 players named to the All-GRC 2nd team. Joining him are Albany’s Ben Homan and Alex Wells, King City’s Luke Spiking, Princeton’s Brent Mitchell and Stanberry’s Darin VanVactor.
GHS senior Kenny Youtsey was named to the league’s honorable mention squad. Other honorable mention picks were Albany’s Jeff Adkins, Hamilton’s Brandon Grooms, Princeton’s Brad Fletcher, Worth County’s Bobby McCutcheon and Chris Healy and South Harrison’s Cole Leazenby, Chase Fletchall and Tyler Luellen.
GHS junior Rochelle Davitt was one of only 4 players to receive unanimous choice all-conference honors. Players who also garnered every vote for 1st team were Albany’s Brooke Hogue, South Harrison’s Dana Merrigan and Stanberry’s Kelli Luke. Maysville’s Brooke Pearl and Worth County’s Claudia Gladstone were also named to the 1st team.
Lady Bulldog sophomore Erin Sweatman earned All-GRC 2nd team recognition. Joining her on the 2nd team were Worth County’s Becky Fletchall, Stanberry’s Annie Sullins, Princeton’s Annie Powell and Albany’s P. J. McCampbell and Sarah Drummond.
Gallatin senior Allison Spidle received honorable mention recognition from coaches, along with Albany’s Terri VanSlyke, Hamilton’s Sara Bryant and Kim Evans, King City’s Amy Davis, Maysville’s Katie Harms, Princeton’s Erin Parnell, South Harrison’s Kristen Heldenbrand, Stanberry’s Jennifer Cooper and Worth County’s Renae Miller.
Final GRC girls standings: 1. Albany 8-0, 2. Stanberry 7-1, 3. (Tie) Gallatin 5-3, and South Harrison, 5-3; 5. Worth County 4-4, 6. (Tie) Hamilton, 2-6; Princeton, 2-6; and Maysville, 2-6; 9. King City, 0-8.
