Gallatin’s boys dropped back-to-back games for the fist time this season when they fell to Lathrop, 51-41, Thursday night in non- conference action that closed the book on the regular season. The Bulldogs struggled from the field, hitting only 6 of 28 attempts at 3-pointers and 10 of 28 field goals from inside the arc.

The Mules held the Bulldogs to their second-lowest, half-game scoring total. The Bulldogs, who played without injured (ankle) starter Neal Steward, totaled 16 points in the 1st half and trailed, 24-16, at the break. A 6-minute scoring drought crippled Gallatin’s effort to pull even in the 2nd quarter as both teams settled into a half-court game. Robert Heldenbrand cleaned the glass and got the put-back to end the Bulldog drought but Richard Berry stepped out from under the basket to nail a long shot that pushed the Mule lead back to a 20-9 with 4 minutes to go in the half.

A Quentin Carroll trey early in the 3rd quarter cut Gallatin’s deficit to 27-23. Three-pointers by Carroll and Joey Evans helped the Bulldogs close to 35-31 with 1:26 left after Lathrop had re- extended its lead to 9 points. Chad Sullenger drove the side of the lane and dished to Kenny Youtsey for a short-layup in at the buzzer to pull the Dogs to within 35-34.

The Mules came out of the huddle with a pair of second-chance baskets and a bucket from a 3-on-2 fast break. The Bulldogs fouled 4 times in 30 seconds in order to send Lathrop foul shooters into the bonus – a strategy that paid off immediately as the Mules missed 4 of their first 5 attempts. Nathan Henderson drove the lane for an unchallenged layup to cut the gap to 44-38, but on a big play for the Mules, Chad Lanning rebounded a missed free throw try and stuck the ball back in with 1:21 showing to keep the Dogs 3 possessions away from a tie.

The Mules, who shot 19 of 42 (45%) from the field, hitched their cart to post players Berry and Lanning, who combined for 14 of their team’s 19 field shots. Berry finished with 21 points and Lanning added another 17. Lathrop made good on 16 shots from within 5 feet of the hoop.

Quentin Carroll surged in the 3rd period by scoring 10 of his team- high 13 points. Sullenger and Heldenbrand finished with 9 and 8 points, respectively. Heldenbrand also pulled down 13 rebounds.
