“Don’t Waste Energy Wasting Energy” is the winning slogan in the Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) 2000 Earth Day Slogan contest. Eleven-year-old Kevin Lee, son of Theresa and Mark Lee of Nevada, submitted the winning slogan. Kevin is a student in Sandy Gilmore’s class at Truman Elementary School in Nevada.

Kevin will receive a $100 savings bond donated by Union Planters Bank and will be recognized during Earth Day ceremonies on Thursday, April 20, at the Capitol lawn in Jefferson City. The slogan was chosen from among hundreds sent in by fifth-grade students from across Missouri.

“Energy plays a central role in the environment and our future,” said DNR Director Steve Mahfood. “We recently created the Missouri Energy Center to help Missouri citizens use energy wisely and explore the use of renewable energy in their everyday life. Kevin’s slogan reminds us all that we can protect Missouri’s environment through prudent energy choices.”

Earth Day activities are free and will feature live entertainers, interactive displays, games and more. Many Missouri businesses have donated prizes that will be given away during the day. Schools are welcome to plan field trips, and the public is invited to attend. For the latest information, visit DNR’s Earth Day Web site at www.dnr.state.mo.us/earthday.
