Communities interested in hosting transformation forums should apply before March 1, 2000.

For over six years, Heartland Regional Community Foundation and Northwest Missouri State University have worked together with communities throughout the region through an endeavor called Healthy Communities for the Midwestern Four Corners. One of the most successful elements of this endeavor has been the three-session Community Transformation Forum.

To ensure equal access to the program throughout the region and make effective use of resources the two facilitators have instituted a process whereby communities must apply for the opportunity to host a transformation forum. Up to five communities will be selected as Community Transformation Forum sites in 2000. Each selected community will host a three-session forum and receive donated services valued at $10,000 including the services of a paid professional facilitator to guide the endeavor.

“It has become evident that we can more effectively address the many challenges we face today when representatives from all walks of life within a community come together,” said Heartland Regional Community Foundation Chief Operating Officer Judy Sabbert-Muck. “The Community Transformation Forum brings together youth, neighbors and friends representing business, education, health, faith, government and social service to look for collaborative approaches to livability issues and community asset building.”

In the spirit of shaping a future based on shared community values, Sabbert-Muck says the three-session forum is a vehicle for: creating positive community change, engaging a diverse group of citizens as part of the strategy to enhance quality of life, helping communities develop and implement action plans to reach desired goals in community improvements, making the place you live a healthier community in the areas of economic vitality, quality of life, health and public participation or capacity building.

The Healthy Communities Regional Advisory Team will select up to five communities annually based on the applicant’s commitment to meet a set of criteria which has proven to elicit lasting results for other Community Transformation Forum sites. Applications are due by no later than 4:30 p.m. on March 1, 2000.

Only those applications from the Midwestern Four Corners Region will be considered. The Midwestern Four Corners Region is defined as the following counties: Andrew (MO), Atchison (MO), Atchison (KS), Brown (KS), Buchanan (MO), Caldwell (MO), Clay (MO), Clinton (MO), Daviess (MO), Decatur (IA), DeKalb (MO), Doniphan (KS), Fremont (IA), Gentry (MO), Grundy (MO), Harrison (MO), Holt (MO), Livingston (MO), Mercer (MO), Nemaha (NE), Nodaway (MO), Page (IA), Platte (MO), Ray (MO), Richardson (NE), Ringgold (IA), Taylor (IA), and Worth (MO).
