Gallatin R-5’s High School Science Olympiad team coached by Dennis Steigerwalt tied for 3rd place last Saturday, Feb. 5, and will be continuing on to state competition at the University of Missouri-Columbia on March 18.

The Gallatin team was awarded third place at competition only to return home and receive a call from Trenton of an error in scoring. With the correction, Plattsburg took first place with 198 accumulated team points, followed by Stanberry with 167.5 points, Maryville with 163 points, Gallatin with 162.5 points, Lawson with 152.5, and Maysville with 120.5. Then upon appeal, Trenton reevaluated the tie in “Can’t Judge a Powder” and Gallatin won a tie breaker and got a point more to score 163 points.

Out of 23 events, Gallatin placed in the top 5 in 21 events, including 3 firsts, 5 seconds, 1 third, 4 fourths, and 8 fifths. The following lists the place in each event and the students’ names. All thirteen students placed in at least one event, so the following will identify the participants.

First place in Bottle Rockets by Wes Gay and Arlan McClellan; first place in Bioprocess by Julie Macy and Meridith McCann; first in Experimental Design by Scott Crose, Ida Jarboe, and Ryan Thompson;

Second in Physics Lab by Pam Walker and Rachelle Scholl; second in Write It – Do It by Chanel Burge and Stephanie Swanstone; second in Practical Data Gathering by Chanel Burge and Stephanie Swanstone; second place in Scrambler by Pam Walker and Chris Baker; second place in Wright Stuff by Katie Moyer and Chris Baker;

Third in Cow A Bungee by Stephanie Swanstone and Ryan Thompson; fourth in Science Clue by Julie Macy and Chanel Burge; fourth in Qualitative Analysis by Chanel Burge and Julie Macy; fourth in Amphibians and Reptiles by Scott Crose and Stephanie Swanstone; fourth in Mission Possible by Wes Gay, Scott Crose, and Arlan McClellan; and fifth place in WWW. Net Search, Rocks and Minerals, Road Scholar, Disease Detective, Chemistry Lab, Can’t Judge a Powder, Water Quality, and Tower Building.
