The Lady Bulldogs have logged more games against the Hamilton Lady Hornets in the 1990s and Y2K than any other team on their schedule. The two squads have already met 11 times in the last 3 1/2 seasons. With Friday night’s 44-39 victory in the 3rd place game of the Hamilton Invitational, the Lady Bulldogs improved to an impressive 21-2 over their Hornet rivals since the beginning of the 1989-90 season.

Hamilton appeared primed to challenge for a trophy by grabbing an early lead and holding on to it for all of the opening quarter. The Lady Bulldogs upped the pace in the 2nd period with defensive pressure that forced the Lady Hornets into their 2nd and 3rd 5- second violations trying to clear the in-bounds pass under the basket.

Erin Sweatman drained a 3-pointer at the 5:45 mark of the 3rd quarter to cap a 9-0 GHS run that produced an overwhelming 29-12 Gallatin advantage. When Elizabeth Eckles scored off a rebound 3 minutes later, it broke a Lady Hornet scoring drought from the field that stretched by to the late minutes of the opening period.

Hamilton cut its deficit to 11 early in the 4th quarter but another Sweatman trey threatened to blow the game open once again. However, Sara Bryant popped in 4 of 4 free throw tries and Kim Evans sank her own 3-pointer to cut the gap to 39-35 with 1:37 left. Rochelle Davitt nailed both ends of an important 2-shot free throw sequence for Gallatin and made another attempt seconds later after rebounding a missed Lady Hornet trey shot.

Sweatman sank a pair of foul shots and Courtney Houghton added another inside the final minute to slam the door on yet another Hamilton upset bid. The Lady Bulldogs struggled at the line down the stretch, hitting only 6 of 15 attempts in the 4th quarter.

Sweatman finished with 3 treys and a game-high 18 points. Rochelle Davitt claimed 15 points on 5 of 11 shooting from the field.

Overmatched in rematch

The Lady Bulldogs fell, 48-33, to a Trenton team they had beaten, 44-40, in the championship game of the Gallatin Invitational. A sub-par showing by Gallatin was, in part, a result of ball handling problems against Trenton’s aggressive man defense.

Trenton sprinted to a 6-0 start but a bucket by Rochelle Davitt and 5 straight points from Spidle gave Gallatin it’s only advantage of the game, 7-6. Trenton built a 22-point cushion before both teams gave the floor to reserves.

Sweatman led Gallatin with 7 points, all in the 2nd quarter. Rochelle Davitt notched 6 in the 1st half. Kayli Burrell came off the bench to add 6 in the final period.
