The Gallatin Bulldogs medaled 4 wrestlers at Saturday’s Grand River Conference Wrestling Championships held at Maysville High School. As a team, the Bulldogs finished 8th in standings ahead of Tarkio, but with only 7 active wrestlers, Gallatin wound up only 25 points out of 2nd place. Maysville easily defended its GRC wrestling crown by outpointing Hamilton and Stanberry.

Junior Randy Eaton won his first GRC wrestling title by defeating Albany’s Dameon Cooper in come-from-behind fashion in the championship match of the 160-pound weight class. Eaton, who placed 2nd in the GRC’s 152-pound class last season, made up an 8-2 deficit by pinning Cooper in the 3rd period of their title match. Eaton, who raised his record to 18-3 with 3 victories, was named the most outstanding wrestler for the conference tournament.

Senior Daniel Wilson finished 2nd on Saturday in the heavyweight division after a title match loss, 8-6, to Maysville’s Daniel Earhart. Wilson, who placed 2nd last season in the 189-pound class, upped his record to 13-9.

Sophomore Austin Story, 11-14 on the season, was a 4th place conference finisher in the 140-pound weight class after taking 3rd (130) a year ago. Sophomore Blake Parker earned his first conference medal with a 4th place finish in the 125-pound class. His record stands at 8-11 following the tournament.

Andrew Parker, 6-12, won a match on Saturday in the wrestleback round at 135 pounds. Luke Leeper, 3-17, captured one match in the 145-pound competition. Cody Boehm, 3-11, was also a wrestleback round winner over Maysville Dustin Drake in the 171-pound division.

Team standings were: 1. Maysville 158, 2. (Tie) Hamilton and Stanberry 89, 4. Rock Port 87, 5. South Holt 83, 6. Albany 79, 7. South Harrison 71, 8. Gallatin 64, 9. Tarkio 56.

The Bulldogs saw their dual meet record fall to 2-8 last Thursday after a 62-15 loss to Maysville. The Wolverines claimed forfeit victories in 8 weight classes. Results of contested weight classes were:

135: B Smith (M) 21-4 tech. fall over Andrew Parker (G). 140: LeMunyon (M) 3-0 decision over Austin Story (G). 145: Budgett (M) pinned Luke Leeper (G). 160: Randy Eaton (G) pinned Davis (M). 171: Cody Boehm (G) pinned Drake (M). 215: Daniel Wilson 11-9 decision over Daniel Earhart.

Gallatin wrestlers traveled to Stanberry Tuesday night and head to Trenton this Saturday for the district tournament. First round matches are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. The top 4 finishers in each weight division at district qualify for the sectional tournament on Feb. 12 at Lexington High School. The state tournament will be held Feb. 17-19 at the Hearnes Center on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus.
