Searcy elementary fourth-grader Jordan Milholland, son of John and Kelli Milholland, won the school-level competition of the 1999 National Geography Bee and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship.
The school-level bee was held at Covel D. Searcy Elementary gym with grades four through six competing. The bee was the first round in the eighth annual National Geography Bee, which is co-sponsored by National Geographic World and Chrysler Corporation.
To win, Jordan had to correctly answer two consecutive oral questions on geography.
Jordan will now advance to the next level of competition, a written examination. Up to 100 of the top scorers in each state and territory participating will be eligible to compete in their state bee.
The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. for state champions and their teacher-escorts to participate in the National Geography Bee national championship in Washington, D.C. First prize is a $25,000 college scholarship.
The National Geographic Society developed the National Geography Bee in response to a growing concern about the lack of geographic knowledge among young people in the United States.
