Members of the North Daviess R-3 Board of Education heard, then approved, a proposal to covert forced air furnace with heat pumps.
R.L. Griggs presented his estimate of necessary boiler work along with an estimate of converting to forced air furnace with heat pumps during the regular meeting of the North Daviess R-3 Board of Administration held Dec. 13 at Jameson.
The board accepted the Griggs proposal for replacing the heat in the FACS, English, history rooms and principal’s office with heat pumps and to pursue completing the high school during the summer. Estimates will be solicited for the elementary building with competition of that project at a later date.
Superintendent Julie Kirby presented information on the FIRE computation for satisfying salary compliance. The district will receive additional funding as a result of the settlement of the desegregation lawsuit, and the state is now allowing some funding for before and after school tutoring.
Bills were paid as presented.
During citizens communication it was voted to give free activity passes to all former employees of the Jameson R-3, Coffey R-1 and North Daviess R-3 school district who are also senior citizens.
Ms. Kirby reported the district should receive an additional $2,2000 in rebates from the E-rate grant. The FCC has ruled that e- rate will not cover cell phones used for security purposes such as on school buses. However, the Alltel bid is still available at the same price without a rebate. The board accepted a motion to get four cell phones for buses and van.
The board discussed dates for filing for the school board election. The school offices will be open on Dec. 21, 1999, and Jan. 18, 2000, until 5 p.m. Hours for Jan. 3 through Jan. 17 are 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
The annual report from food service has been finalized and approved. During the 1998-1999 school year, the Food Program posted a loss of $18,514.39. Ms. Kirby will continue working with the cooks to assure cost containment. The board agreed upon goals for the food service program.
An increase in student count as a result of new students moving in has resulted in the need for a second special education teacher. Ms. Kirby will begin the recruitment process.
Mr. Willhite will be working with area principals to develop a schedule for 2000-01.
Gregg Hartley was appointed as alternate to the ITV executive counsel.
During administrative reports Mr. Willhite and Ms. Ford reported on the workshop on the new teacher evaluation standards. Mrs. Ford gave a summary of the Winter Music Program/Dinner. A calendar of upcoming events was presented.
Ms. Kirby reported on the condition of one of the school buses. The transmission will have to be repaired.
The board went into executive session to discuss employee performance.
The board returned to regular session. The evaluations were adopted as presented for superintendent, elementary principal and high school principal.
The board meeting place was changed to the elementary school starting in January.
The next regular meeting of the Board of Education was set for 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 17 at the elementary lunchroom in Coffey.
