Gallatin’s girls successfully opened the Grand River Conference basketball season Friday night with a solid 67-51 victory over the visiting Princeton Tigers. Gallatin led from the opening tip and won pulling away as 10 different GHS players got into the scoring act. The GHS girls ran afoul of their 1st loss of the season on Tuesday when they were tripped up, 54-43, at Gilman City.

Gallatin jumped out to a 14-2 lead in the opening minutes of Friday’s conference game but Princeton consistently chipped away at the lead. The Lady Bulldogs used several different combinations in the 1st half before taking a 34-28 advantage into half time.

Rochelle Davitt led all scorers with 19 points. She also grabbed a team-high 8 rebounds. Shannon Batson scored 11 points. Kayli Burrell chipped in with 8. Allison Spidle turned in a well-rounded performance with 7 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists and 2 steals. Roxi Davitt added 7 points and 3 assists. Rebecca Stith chipped in 6 points for Gallatin, 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the league.

Annie Powell and Erin Parnell each dumped in 13 points for the Lady Tigers, who fell to 2-4 and 0-1.

The Lady Bulldogs committed only 8 turnovers while forcing the Lady Tigers into 19 miscues.

Gilman City’s Lady Hawks were able to handle Gallatin’s pressure defense and used a 9 of 17 free throw rate in the 4th quarter to close out the game. Gilman City also out rebounded Gallatin by 10 boards.

Spidle canned 14 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs. Becky Lager registered a game-high 21 points, including a pair of important 3- point plays down the stretch. Melanie Williams added 16 points for the winners, who raised their record to 5-2.
