Gallatin 6th graders toll the bell to commemorate the death of George Washington.
Mrs Davitt’s sixth graders at Searcy elementary helped the Gallatin Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution commemorate the 200th anniversary of George Washington’s death on Dec. 14. At 12 noon, the sixth graders took their turn at bat and tolled the bell on the east end of the football field, while bells all across America rang for one minute. In honor of the country’s first president’s death, from dawn to dusk American flags were lowered to half staff. On Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, a reenactment of the funeral of George Washington will be held at Mount Vernon and telecast live on CSPAN from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. locally. The reenactment will feature 250 individuals. [Staff Photo/TLH]
