The Grand River Audubon Christmas Bird Count will be conducted Dec. 18. Local volunteers are among more than 50,000 nationwide participating in the National Audubon Society’s 100thChristmas Bird Count to unfold Dec. 16 through Jan. 3.

One hundred years ago 27 conservationists decided to protest the traditional bird shoot and, instead of hunting birds, they counted them on Christmas Day, 1900. The event originated as a protest to the traditional holiday side hunt in which teams competed to see who could shoot the most birds and animals in one day.

Today, volunteers from all 50 states, every Canadian province, parts of Central and South America, Bermuda, the West Indies, and Pacific islands will count and record every individual bird and bird species encountered during one calendar day.

Count data are published annually by the National Audubon Society. Count data from 1900 to the present are currently available on the following internet web site: http://www.birdsource.org which is a cooperative project of the National Audubon Society and the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology.

All counts are open to birders of all skill levels. For more information about the count to be taken along the Grand River, call Terry McNeely at Jameson, 828-4215.
