While the Trenton Lady Bulldogs were struggling to find the basket in the 4th quarter, the Gallatin Lady Bulldogs were tacking on the free throws that gave them the winning margin in Saturday night’s 44-40 victory in the championship game of the Gallatin Invitational.

Gallatin’s victory marked the 11th straight year a Lady Bulldog team left the court with a trophy. Gallatin is now tied with Winston for the most GIT titles (7) in the 23-year history of the event.

Gallatin received big contributions from younger players down the stretch. Sophomore Erin Sweatman knocked down a pair of field goals, including a trey, to give the GHS Lady Bulldogs a 37-34 lead midway through the final quarter. Freshman Roxi Davitt stole the ball and converted a layup that pushed the GHS advantage to 39-34. Trenton tried in vain to knock the lid off the basket. Cara Henderson missed a wide open, fast break layup, followed by a missed crip shot by Julie Coon.

Senior Courtney Houghton dumped in a free throw at the 2:12 mark to push Gallatin’s lead to 40-34 but Trenton fought back with a pair of buckets. Senior Allison Spidle stripped the ball from Henderson on a Trenton possession. Sweatman went to the free line and hit the first of a 2-shot foul. Trenton answered with a pair of free throws out of 4 attempts that narrowed the lead to 41-40. Trenton went over the 10-foul limit and sent Roxi Davitt to the line, where she promptly converted both attempts.

The THS girls took 3 shots at the basket in the final 5 seconds and missed a golden opportunity to send the contest into overtime when a pass from the foul line split a pair of GHS defenders and found the hands of a wide open Henderson on the block. She missed the crip, Roxi Davitt gathered in the rebound and closed the game with her 10th and 11th points on a pair of shots from the charity stripe.

Sweatman finished as the game’s high scorer with 17 points and led all female scorers in the tournament with 46 points. She became the 5th Gallatin female in the last 8 years to win the most valuable player award. Rochelle Davitt, though held to only a 3rd quarter bucket, was also named to the all-tournament team.

Gallatin had little trouble with Gilman City in the semifinal round. The Lady Bulldogs used a 14-0 2nd quarter run and 22-6 4th period advantage to close out the Lady Hawks, 58-27. Rochelle Davitt led the way with 17 points. Sweatman totaled 11.

Girls trophies:

Top-seeded South Harrison wrapped up a disappointing tournament by falling to Gilman City, 32-20, in the girls 3rd place game. The Lady Hawks won the game with a 6-0 shutout score in the 3rd quarter and by hitting 6 of 9 free throws down the stretch. Becky Lager paced Gilman with 12 points. Dana Merrigan led the Lady Bulldogs with 11.

Hamilton dumped Maysville, 43-38, to win the girls consolation. Kim Evans and Sara Bryant each scored 12 points for the Lady Hornets. The Lady Wolverines received 11 points from Brooke Pearl.
