Teams advance toward Championship.
Gallatin, Trenton and South Harrison each advanced both girls and boys teams to the Gallatin Invitational semifinal round, which begins tonight (Wednesday) 7:45 with #1 South Harrison girls vs. #4 Trenton and #2 Gallatin girls against #3 Gilman City.
The boys semifinal round starts at 7:45 Thursday when #2 Trenton takes on #3 South Harrison. Top-seeded Gallatin tackles #5 Hamilton in the nightcap.
Gallatin teams found easy pickings in the opening round. The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 13-0 lead on the way to a 53-26 win over #7 Winston. Sophomore Erin Sweatman bagged 8 of her career-high 18 points in the opening quarter. Junior Rochelle Davitt chipped in 10 points for Gallatin coach Rick Lin, who was able to shuffle a steady stream of players in and out of the lineup. Senior Shannon Batson added 7 points and Kayli Burrell chimed in for the freshman class with 6 points.
The Bulldog boys scored the game’s first 16 points in route to a 36-4 1st quarter lead and 81-35 final margin over #8 Maysville. Senior Chad Sullenger bombed away from the 3-point arc, cashing in on 5 long range shots toward his game-leading total of 23 points. Sophomore Robert Heldenbrand scored 6 of his 19 points in the opening 33 seconds. He added 7 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 assists to his portfolio. Senior Quentin Carroll scored 15 points for Gallatin and topped the Bulldogs with 4 steals and 5 assists. Senior Kenny Youtsey also scored 15 points to round out the GHS top-scoring quartet.
In the tournament’s other 1st round girls contests, South Harrison’s top-seeded girls manhandled Tri-County, 40-12, Trenton’s #4 girls downed Hamilton, 41-32, and the #3 Gilman City girls survived a 16-6 4th quarter rally by Maysville to win, 40-39.
Hamilton’s boys scored the lone upset in their bracket by beating #4 Gilman City, 53-43, in Tuesday’s late game. Trenton’s #2 boys hung a 54-17 defeat on #7 Winston. South Harrison’s #3 boys took it to Tri-County, 51-31.
Early games on Wednesday and Thursday feature consolation bracket games. This year’s GIT trophy schedule sees battle for consolation titles on Friday, along with the 3rd place girls game. Saturday’s schedule features the boys 3rd place game and girls and boys championships at 7:00 and 8:30, respectively.
