Kerri Baker, sophomore, is the school winner in the Voice of Democracy contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2172, Gallatin. Winning second and third place were juniors Rachel Fisher and Casey Griffin.

The results were reported by Darlene Patton, the contest chairman. The Voice of Democracy is an annual broadcast script-writing contest in which students write a speech on a patriotic theme and record the speech for judging. This year’s theme was “America’s Role in the Next Century.”

“It was a difficult topic,” said Casey, “because there were so many ways you could go with it. I

thought I had done pretty well, but I was still surprised.” Rachel was also surprised by her win. “I just wrote what was on the top of my head,” she said.

“My mom and dad and Mr. Hartley pressured me into entering,” said Kerri. “Now I’m glad I did.”

“I always enjoy this contest,” said Mr. Hartley, who teaches English II and III. “Students are always surprised to win. I think it’s a great program and really appreciate the efforts of the VFW to offer it to area schools. I just wish that every eligible student would enter.”

The winners will read their speeches at the VFW’s annual banquet to be held in March 2000.
