Dashing movie stars and daring cowboys, silly clowns and sober presidents, authors and artists, sports figures and pioneers, all came to historic life as Searcy Elementary fourth graders celebrated “Missouri Day” on Wednesday, Oct. 20, by presenting a wax museum of famous Missourians.
After gathering information about their subjects, the students set up displays and dressed the part of their chosen historic figures. Forty-nine students from the classes of Mrs. Jarboe and Mrs. Ellis then used written signs, tape recorded messages, or “came to life” to relay information about their famous Missourians to family, friends and schoolmates, during a tour of the wax museum. This year’s crowd was the largest yet, at 126.
The third Wednesday of October is “Missouri Day” as declared by our congress. Among the local celebrities represented at the wax museum were George Washington Carver, Jerry Litton, Jesse James, Susan Elizabeth Blow, Daniel Boone, Harry S. Truman, and Calamity Jane. Students completed a study of famous Missourians with the activity.
