Thelma Gatenby
Funeral services for Thelma Gatenby were held Oct. 13 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home. The body was cremated with burial in the family plot in Gallatin. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be given to the American Heart Association.
Thelma Pauline Gatenby, 85, Harlingen, Texas, died Oct. 10, 1999.
Mrs. Gatenby was born at the family home on a farm near Orchard, Neb. She graduated from Neligh High School in 1932. She and her family lived on farms in both Nebraska and Iowa, moving to a farm south of Gallatin in 1949. In 1956, they moved to the town of Gallatin. After retirement, she and her husband, Harold, spent their winters in Arizona and Texas, residing in Harlingen, Texas, after 1991.
Mrs. Gatenby was employed at Lambert Manufacturing Company in Gallatin and Pattonsburg Manufacturing Company for a total of 25 years.
Mrs. Gatenby joined the Methodist Episcopal Church in Neligh, Neb., in 1923. After moving to Gallatin, she became an active member of the Gallatin United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday School and singing in the choir. For this, she received a special membership pin. She was also an active member of the Rebekah Lodge for more than 50 years, transferring to the Harlingen Lodge in 1991. During this time, she held numerous local and district offices.
On Feb. 23, 1933, she married Harold Fred Gatenby. He survives of the home.
Mrs. Gatenby was preceded in death by a granddaughter and a grandson.
Other survivors include two sons, Jerrold M., Tucson, Ariz., and Harold Eugene, Auburn, Wash.; and four daughters, Norma Rae Bashford of Fulton, Rita Louise Beard of Las Vegas, Nev., Ruth Elaine Arms of Falls City, Neb., and Sharon Kay Frank of LaFeria, Texas.
