Daviess County ambulance crew members Vanda Davis, Jason Smith and Rusty Stamper received hands-on training recently on the Kidder-Altamont-Winston (KAW) Fire & Rescue Department’s “Jaws of Life” in Winston. Each crew member took turns cutting away the doors and taking off the top of a vehicle after it was involved in an accident.

A rescue simulation scenario was set up for the crew with a wrecked car along with patients who needed treatment. Crash “victims” Ronny Tarepin, Challice Freeman, Nathan Curtis, Lacey Curtis and Brandon Curtis were made up with cuts, road rash, and broken bones. Three of the “victims” were trapped in the car and had to be extricated. Two of the “victims” were ejected from the car. Each patient was treated for their “injuries.”

KAW volunteers have been busy working on each fire station, getting them ready for winter. The volunteers are building on to Station Two in Kidder. An office has been added to Station Three in Altamont. A rescue dummy has been purchased. It will be housed by Station Four upon the station’s completion.

During the past month, volunteers have responded to 13 medical calls, seven fires, and three MVA/rescues.

KAW meets the second Wednesday evening of each month. Training sessions are held the third Sunday. Chief and officers meet the first Sunday of each month. The district will burn down old buildings for anyone in the district who requests the service.
