Oliver Smelcer, 88, Lawson, former resident of Pattonsburg, died Oct. 19 in Liberty.

Funeral services for Oliver Smelcer were held Oct. 24 at Old Union Christian Union Church, Lawson, with the Rev. Mike Polo officiating. Arrangements were by Polley Funeral Home, Excelsior Springs. Burial was in Old Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Ray County Hospice in care of the funeral home.
Oliver Clayton Smelcer, 88, Lawson, died Oct. 19, 1999, at Liberty Hospital.
Mr. Smelcer was born in Waynoka, Okla. He served in the Army during World War II in Central Europe and Northern France, where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded five Bronze Stars and a Good Conduct Medal.
Mr. Smelcer was employed as supervisor at Pioneer Cap Factory for 33 years, retiring in 1980.
In 1937, he married Barbara Louise Musick. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Terry, Kansas City; two grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren.
