Freshman elementary education major Amanda K. Moyer, Northwest Missouri State University, was presented with a crystal award on Oct. 2 for receiving the only private, full-tuition scholarship at the University, the James D. Plowman Scholarship. Amanda is a 1999 graduate of Gallatin High School.

“I was really excited when I found out,” Amanda said. “My parents are really appreciative of it, and so am I. I’m just working now to keep my GPA up.”

Gallatin native Jim D. Plowman, owner of Midwest Walnut Co. in Council Bluffs, Iowa, is the donor of funding for scholarships that will exceed $10,000 for over four years of education at Northwest for each Plowman Scholar.

“Private scholarship programs that fully fund tuition are not very common at regional universities, so we are obviously delighted that this opportunity exists for Gallatin students,” said Roger Pugh, Dean of Enrollment Management at Northwest.

A Plowman Scholar must be a graduate of Gallatin High School with superior academic merit and must demonstrate school and community involvement. The full tuition award is based on the recipient attending Northwest, maintaining a 3.50 GPA, and receiving the recommendation of the selection committee.

“We are very grateful that Mr. Plowman has made this program available for students in the Gallatin community,” said Lonelle R. Rathje, Northwest assistant director for the Annual Fund. “As the cost to attend college continues to increase, scholarships often dictate a student’s ability to attend the school of his or her choice.”

Amanda is the daughter of Gina Dixon of Gallatin and Steve Moyer of Polo.
