The Caldwell County Health Department is advising residents and vacationers to avoid the water at Hideaway Lakes near Polo.
Health officials tested two lakes and three ponds at the resort in June and found the levels of fecal coliform were three times greater than the standard the state uses to close lakes. The levels were above 600 colonies of fecal coliform per 100 milliliters of water.
The state closes most lakes at levels of more than 200 colonies of fecal coliform per 100 milliliters. Geese are the principal suspects in the contamination of the lakes. The bacteria can lead to diarrhea, gastrointestinal illness, and skin and eye infections
