The Pit Stop on US Highway 69 at Winston has been sold to Jeff and Kay Speaker of St. Joseph. The Speakers previously lived in St. Joseph and worked in Kansas City. They are planning to quit their jobs this week and relocate to their home at Lake Viking and operate the Pit Stop full-time.

The Speakers will hold a Grand Opening for the convenience store and service station on Monday, May 10, but are hoping to open the store earlier than that date if possible.

“It’s been our dream for some time to move to the lake and this is making that possible,” said Mr. Speaker. “My wife, Kay, and I have owned a second home at Lake Viking and have been around for about 20 years. We know how friendly and outgoing the community is. People have told us they want the store back open and we’re going to oblige them.”

The previous owner of the Pit Stop had laid concrete and made plans for a car wash and laundromat. The Speakers say they will let the business and the customers dictate what to do with the rest of the property.

Mr. Speaker has worked as the Executive Director for DeMolay International , a youth organization for young men between 18 and 21. Mrs. Speaker has worked as an RN at St. Lukes Hospital on Berry Road. They have been spending evenings and weekends getting the Pit Stop ready.

“We’re really excited about opening the store and look forward to servicing the public,” said Mr. Speaker. “We appreciate their business and hope they appreciate our being there. We want everyone to come out and see us on our Grand Opening.”

The Speakers have three children. Their daughter, Jane Anne Daffron, is a doctor in Kansas City, and their two sons, Brian and David, are both in college at the University of Missouri.
