Hunting totals for the spring turkey season are down compared to first week totals posted last spring although the total reported for Daviess County is higher than last year. There were 279 birds reported locally after the first week of hunting, an increase of 114 over last year.

The kill count for the northwest reporting region is 3,671 thus far, a decrease of 286 turkeys compared to last spring’s first week. Leading the region were Caldwell County 372, Carroll County 313 and Harrison County 282. No hunting accidents were reported.

Statewide a total of 25,294 turkeys were reported, a decrease of 974 from last year. Leading the state were Franklin County 563, Texas County 473 and Osage County 439. There were seven non-fatal hunting accidents reported.

Counties surrounding Daviess County report the following first week counts: Gentry 145, DeKalb 279, Livingston 202, Grundy 194. The spring turkey season runs from April 19 through May 9.
