This week finds Gallatin R-5 golfers tuning up for the May 3 Grand River Conference Tournament. Gallatin handed Albany only its second loss of the season Monday afternoon (April 26), beating the Warriors by 4 strokes in tri-meet competition that also featured the Princeton Tigers. The Bulldogs combined for a team score of 160 to hold off the Warriors (164) and Tigers (223). Gallatin raised its record to 8-1 by knocking off Hamilton and Lathrop on Tuesday in play at Hamilton’s Lakeview Country Club.
Gallatin’s Scott Crose and Chad Sullenger shot rounds of 39 as part of a 3-way tie for the medalist honor at Albany. The Warriors’ John McConkey also carded a 39 at the Albany Country Club course. Brice Garnett and Jon Culver added scores of 40 and 42, respectively, for the Bulldogs. Joey Evans shot a 46.
Evans and Crose tied for medalist honors at Hamilton as the Bulldogs totaled 160 to beat Hamilton (198) and Lathrop (207). Gallatin’s 5 varsity golfers outshot all but one other individual in the competition. Culver finished a shot off the medalist pace with a 40. Garnett added a 42 to the varsity total. Sullenger finished with a 45.
The Bulldogs easily won the junior varsity competition at Hamilton by posting a 206 team score. Hamilton finished runner-up with 270 and Lathrop posted a 294. Jake Humphrey’s 44 led the field. Other GHS jayvee scores included Ryan Thompson 52, Luke Leeper 53 and Brant Conover 57. Travis Bohannon’s 67 was not used toward the team score.
Gallatin finished with a team score of 109 behind Cameron (108) and Lawson (107) April 22 in a rain-shortened bramble best ball and best shot tournament held in Plattsburg. Culver and Evans combined for a 9-hole score of 36, one shot behind Lawson’s duo of Grant Curtis and Nick Sloop in best ball competition. Garnett and Sullenger teamed up for a 31 to take first in the best shot competition.
The Bulldogs will try to keep their win streak alive against GRC squads when they take on Maysville and King City in Maysville on April 29. The May 3 GRC varsity tournament will be held at South Harrison High School. The junior varsity conference tournament will be held May 5 at Stanberry.
