A contract for elementary principal was offered to Rolinda Ford and a contract for high school principal was offered to Todd Willhite for the 1999-2000 school year during the closed session of the April 12, 1999, meeting of the North Daviess R-3 Board of Education.
During the regular meeting, the results of the April 6, 1999, election were read and newly elected members were sworn in by secretary Beverly Hunter. New board members are Donald Baker, Beverly Hunter and Bob Griffin. The old board was adjourned.
David Iddings was nominated as president. Bob Griffin, vice-president; Beverly Hunter, secretary; Debbie Ray, treasurer. Chris Nelson was appointed to fill the position of Bea Bailey until the next election.
Mr. Schoppenhorst reported the extended summer school is scheduled for May 17-28, 1999.
During old business, Rhonda Sweet inquired if restrooms had been repaired in the softball snack shack. The board consented that work should have been done as the September motion reads and Mr. Schoppenhorst would see that the work gets done in time for Summer Community Baseball.
During citizen communications, Linda Sarver’s request that the district continue the Career Ladder program was agreed to by the board. Eleven teachers have applied for the 1999-2000 school year.
Annette Bartz’s request that the board waive the two-year requirement for step two of the Career Ladder as provided in the Career Ladder Policy since she had previous experience was agree to by the board.
Steve Coulson presented a request on behalf of the FFA that the board help pay some of the expenses for the state convention. The board agree to pay $200.00 for rooms for the FFA.
During new business, lawn mowing bids were opened and read. Bids for the elementary school yard were: Darcie Iddings: $35; Shannon Dutro: $23.50; Lee Hunter: $35. For high school yard: Lindsay Hunter $125; Steve Coulson $100; Lee Hunter $125.
David Iddings and Beverly Hunter abstained from the votes.
The bid was awarded to Darcie Iddings’ for $35 for the elementary school yard and to Beverly Hunter for $125 for the high school yard.
Elizabeth Harden presented a grant application with budget designed to obtain the Accelerated Reader program. The complete grant proposal will be known as “Read and Succeed.” A motion carried to implement “Read and Succeed” if the grant is approved.
During administrative reports, Julie Kirby reported that Peggy Heldenbrand, elementary head cook, had requested and obtained an extended leave of absence in order to care for her father. She expects to return in the fall and will make a decision regarding the summer school on April 30, 1999. Debbie Courter will assumed the hours and duties of head cook and Ermagene Welty will be the temporary assistant cook in the elementary school. Bob Heldenbrand, elementary custodian, is resigning effective April 16, 1999, for health reasons. Advertising for this position will begin next week.
A report was given on the college preparation program offered through Graceland College.
Professional development funds have been utilized to provide CPR training to interested staff members. This training will take place from 3:30 to 7 p.m. on April 29, 1999, in the elementary library.
Ms. Kirby reported the district needed to turn in a general assurance statement regarding the implementation of IDEA compliance requirements.
The board agreed to a motion to complete IDEA assurances that a Comprehensive System of Personnel Development for FY 1999 has been implemented and that a plan for FY 2000 will be developed. The district assures that an Administrative Program Evaluation for FY 1999 has been conducted and an evaluation will be performed for FY 2000.
The health inspector has suggested the doors to the high school lunch room be replaced. This will be placed on the summer work schedule.
Positions for the support staff and raises will take place during the May regular board meeting.
The board went into closed session to discuss administrative contracts. The board returned to regular session.
Present at the North Daviess R-3 regular school board meeting on April 12 were board members Rhonda Sweet, Debbie Ray, Beverly Hunter, David Iddings, Chris Nelson and Bob Griffin; Superintendent E.W. Schoppenhorst; board secretary Beverly Hunter and citizens Julie Kirby and Ramona Sutton.
Bills were approved as presented. The next regular school board meeting was set for 7 p.m. on May 10, 1999, at the elementary school.
