Three proposals to lease the Daviess County Care Center are now under consideration. A recommendation about the future operation of the nursing home in Gallatin by the Care Center’s board of directors to the Daviess County Commission has yet to be announced.
The county commission met with the care center’s board of directors during the evening of April 19 at the nursing home to interview prospective lessees. Proposals have been submitted by Health Systems Incorporated, Tiffany’s Care Centers Inc., and J&R Associates, LP. Negotiations about changing the present not-for-profit management organization to private enterprise continue.
According to county commission minutes, the first presentation made April 19 was by James Lincoln on behalf of Health Systems Incorporated. This company has approximately 40 homes including facilities at Chillicothe and Carrollton.
The second presentation was by David Duncan of Tiffany’s Care Centers, Inc. This company presently has nine homes located at Mound City, King City, Maysville, Brookfield, and in Andrew, Atchison and Nodaway counties.
A third proposal was presented by James Lloyd and Robert Clausan of J&R Associates, LP. This company operates nursing homes in Cameron, Hamilton, Smithville and Lathrop.
All three companies indicated intent to utilize the local pharmacy. Terms involving lease payments, building maintenance, planned improvements, staffing policies and training, and other details varied.
Should a decision be made to lease the nursing home to private enterprise, the facility’s current board of directors would dissolve. The county commissioners discussed the possibility of retaining a local advisory board.
In other business matters addressed at the April 19 meeting, the Care Center’s board requested that a range hood be purchased from funds of the Mays Estate. The hood presently in use constitutes a fire hazard. Two bids had previously be obtained with a bid from McBroom’s Electric for $14,460 accepted by the DCCC board.
The funds in the Mays Estate account are not sufficient to cover this entire cost. Any balance is to be paid by the Care Center.
Those attending the April 19 meeting included DCCC directors Steve Evans, Max Hefley, Wilbur Roloson, Arland Haynes, Jean Caldwell, Kenny Mason, Bill Landes; Administrator Marcie Heckenbach, Director of Nursing Dana Shipers; attorney Robert Cowherd; County Commissioners David Tolen, David Holcomb and Danny Heldenbrand; and County Clerk Linda Steward.
