Head Start has played a major role in focusing attention on the importance of early childhood development, especially in the first five eyars of life. In many wasy, the program has had a dramatic impact on the child development field nationwide. Head Start has served as a model for many other child development programs, public and private. It has had a prfound influence on the planning of child dvelopment and day care services; on the expansion of state and local activities for children; on the range and quality of services offered to young childrena nd their families; and on the design of trianing programs for those who staff such programs.
The program has also led in efforts toto improve the cognitive abilities of young children.Studies have indicated hat Head Start children score higher themn comparable non-Head Start children on rpeshcool achievment tests that measure these abilities.
