Winston building project delayed, school fully accredited

Project managers from CTS were at the Winston R-6 School Board meeting held Nov. 21 to discuss and update the current classroom building project that is underway at the school. Currently there is a delay in acquiring the prefabricated walls that will be the outer structure of the new building. This in turn will delay the start of the project until January. The unforeseen delay in the start of the project will also push the projected completion date to the start of the second semester of the 2017-2018 school year.
In other business, the school board candidate filing period for the April 4, 2017, election was set for Dec. 13 – Jan. 17, 2017. Candidates can file from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. after Dec. 13, 2016, and until Jan. 17, 2017, on regular school days. This year’s Winston R-VI School District board election will consists of three-three year terms.
The 2016 MSIP Annual Performance Report (APR) has the Winston School District earning full accreditation with the Missouri Department of Elementary & Secondary Education.
Superintendent’s Brian Robinson reported that a grant application has been submitted to the Environmental Protection Agency to help replace school buses. Selection is based on a lottery system of school districts that have eligible buses. The school district has one bus that meets the eligibility criteria. An application has been sent to apply for $20,000 of the funds available. Being selected does not obligate the district to replace the bus, but it does give the district the opportunity to utilize the funding source.
Future dates of importance: Dec. 1 band field trip to UMKC; Dec. 10, ACT test date; Dec. 15, Christmas concert 6 p.m.; Dec. 19, Winston board meeting; Dec. 22, early out 12:35 p.m.; Jan. 2-4, no school; Jan.4, Professional Development; Jan. 5, FFA Greenhand Motivational Convention in Trenton.
The Daviess County Health Department was at the school recently to conduct a flu shot clinic for the staff and Winston community.
Winston High School Principal reported that Mrs. Martin and six members of the FFA Chapter attended the National Convention in Indianapolis, Ind.
Mrs. Pliley organized a student/parent financial aid meeting attended by six seniors and five parents.
Student Council held their 2nd annual fall bonfire. The event was free of charge but the council did accept any “free will donations” with any proceeds being donated to the Special Olympics.
The Student Council has also started a couple initiatives to help boost school spirit and overall morale. The STUCO is randomly selected faculty members to be honored as staff members of the month. Their pictures are placed on the bulletin board outside the art room along with some facts about them. Also, STUCO has issued each student “Punch Cards”. Students can receive a punch for attending various events during the year. Students who receive enough punches will be given a reward at the end of the year. Students who fill their card with punches will be entered into a drawing for a Tablet.
The FFA Chapter held a blood drive and collected 10 units of blood.
Juniors took the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) Test. Overall Winston students did well on the test. This assessment is different than many other standardized tests in that it not only tests traditional academic areas such as reading and math, but it also tests mechanical knowledge and electronics knowledge.
The school held our annual salute to veterans. This year’s ceremony was attended by 10 of our local veterans as honored guests.
The district had Professional Development with morning training “Active Shooter” scenarios provided by the sheriff’s department.
Elementary Principal reported that Radiant Redbirds Tutoring has taken on a new look for the A+ students as well as the elementary students participating.
October Students of the Month celebrating the character traits of honesty/trust: kindergarten-Lindsey Phillips; first-Kaitlyn Estes; second-Isabel Robinson; third-Ella Filley; fourth-Noah Riddle; fifth-Eli Ford; sixth-Jacob Muessig.
During National Young Reader’s Weeks fourth graders participated in a Read-a-Thon week to see how many books they could read throughout the day with a goal of 125. The read over 270 books that day during the specified reading times.
During Boxtops for Education, the 5th grade class took first place turning in over 244 boxtops. Money collected from the boxtops goes to purchase items for student celebrations and the birdbuck shop. Coordinator for Boxtops was Mrs. Ray
Lunch Tray Trophy Winners – First Quarter Champions were PK (ECSE) and 4th grade. Both classes received an ice cream treat.
First Quarter Awards celebration was held with 26 students receiving Perfect Attendance awards. Students were also recognized for honor roll (grade 3-6), specials awards, character awards, and individual classroom awards.
The closed session on the published agenda was not held.
