A new play at William Jewell College takes on the sizeable task of covering the college’s 150- year history. Higher Ground, written by Jewell theater professor Dr. Kim Harris, spans the college’s rich history in observance of the institution’s sesquicentennial anniversary. “The play takes on the daunting challenge of covering a century and a half, but it doesn’t do it in typical, pageant style,” Harris hints.

Senior education major Serena Irby, daughter of Dr. Bill and Barbara Irby of Gallatin, plays a Jewell student in the production. Irby has been involved in many theater productions during her time at William Jewell.

Harris volunteered to write the play because he felt it a fitting tribute to the college’s history in Clay County. To gather material for the play, he researched catalogs from the beginning to the present, yearbooks, student newspapers and biographies of notable college figures like Alexander Doniphan and Columbia physician William Jewell.

Performances begin at 8 p.m. on March 29 in Peters Theater on campus, and they continue until April 1. Tickets cost $4 for adults and $3 for students, seniors and children. Please call (816) 781-7700, ext. 5754, for tickets.
